Lifeboat- An Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece
Long just before Spielberg and Tarantino, there was Alfred Hitchcock who paved the way for all of nowadays’s revered directors. His 1944 film Lifeboat, based on a screenplay written by John Steinbeck, is masterful for its intelligent plot, impressive special effects and the truth that it was shot entirely on a single set. Set against the backdrop of Planet War 2, it was well received upon its release in January 1944, when the real war was close to conclusion.
A Test of Human Endurance, Compassion and Most of All, Survival.
After narrowly surviving their ship being torpedoed by the Germans, nine people from different walks of life come across themselves stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean. The inimitable Tallulah Bankhead stars as Constance Porter, a amazing, self absorbed journalist who keeps the other people in check with her sharp tongue and acidic wit. Her companions are played by largely unknown actors, but all of them do a superb job of bringing their respective characters to life. Though dazed and confused, they’re thankful to be alive and confident that enable will soon come. But as the days pass and their strength ebbs due to lack of sustenance, desperation and chaos ensues. During the film, one woman drowns herself, an amputee is pushed into the ocean and a third is fatally stabbed.
1 could say that survival of the fittest is the most crucial theme in Lifeboat, but there’s definitely even more at play. It’s inescapably political; we’re produced to believe that the American and English characters are nicely intentioned whilst the single Axis figure, Willy, isn’t to be trusted. When it’s revealed that he’s German, the other people argue more than whether or not or not he will need to be trusted to row the boat, even if he is the only 1 with any maritime knowledge. The general lack of accord puts the Allies at a significant disadvantage and they soon lose the wherewithal to even lift a finger to Willy, who is miraculously able to row the boat for hours with small rest. He plots and schemes quietly, but turns on one of the Americans whilst the other people are asleep.
Who To Trust Even though You are All Stranded In the Middle of the Ocean?
Lifeboat convincingly handles the topic of human courage and endurance and forces us to ask ourselves what we may possibly do under risky circumstances. Even though the film deals with severe subject matter, some comedy is interspersed. The lustful Constance Porter literally throws herself into the unprepared lap of a man named Kovac, boldly inquires about his past girlfriends and writes her initials on his chest in large letters with lipstick. He humors her for a little while just before pushing her away; unable to get past her bedroom vanitym vanity. The constant lust and hate relationship between Porter and Kovac adds a human element to a film that is otherwise rather bleak.
Lifeboat is a wonderful film with a clean, crisp plot and engaging dialogue. It’s extremely suggested for everyone with an interest in films that not only illustrate the perils of war, but the strength and resolve of the human spirit. It is extremely and enthusiastically advised.
