When you are having problems with your garage door and it will not open or close, there are a few things that you could try and look at before calling help of the professionals. The opener may be new and not working, or else it has stopped working after some time.
Before anything else, check the sensors. These will be located near the ground on both sides of the garage door and should be clear of leaves or other rubbish; even a cobweb might mean that you can’t open your door.
Also, once you have located the sensors of the garage door, you need to check that they are correctly aligned and indeed pointing at each other. The sensors may have come misplaced and you have not noticed, meaning that they will not function correctly. Also, if the lights on the sensors are constantly on or are flashing, then this means there is a fault.
If it is a new opener that you have installed that will not work and has never worked, then you need to check for faulty wiring. However, if the opener is new, then it should be under guarantee and you needn’t tamper excessively with it. If however you know a little about wiring, you can test the wires for faults and to check the voltage.
There may be a problem though that your garage door opens and closes, but sporadically, hitting the ground but then bouncing back up. This of course is not a problem with either the sensors or the wiring, and is more likely to be a problem with the bottom limiter. If you read the instructions that came with the opener you should be able to fix this problem quite easily.
When you have exhausted all the above possibilities and you still cannot find what is causing the problem, then it is time to call in a technician. A technician will use his experience and expertise to ensure the problem is found and solved quickly.
In the mean time, you can always disconnect your garage door from the opener and open and close it manually. You will find a cord to pull that will of course allow you to shut your door as it will fall down. If you use this method to shut your door then you need to remember that you will then have to manually lock the door with the key provided in order to keep your vehicle or possessions safe.
