Teeth Whiteners And Mall Clinics
It probably started in the late 1990s or at the turn of the century; people using teeth whiteners to try to create a business advantage. As competition became more intense in the corporate world, having a brighter smile than your competitor was seen as a way to make a better first impression on potential clients. So the visits to the dentists began, followed soon after by a flood of teeth whitening products that could be used at home. And not long after they became prevalent, another way arose for people to get their teeth whitened.
Sensing a business opportunity of their own, many people began to set up teeth bleaching operations in strip malls and shopping centers. These kiosks or salons were able to offer teeth whiteners comparable to those used in a dental office, but at a more affordable price. As thousands flocked to these establishments, however, associations of dentists began to object. They maintained that practitioners in these clinics were performing dental procedures, which was illegal if they were not licensed, and therefore they should be shut down for the safety of their customers.
There were good reasons for the dental associations to object, and not, as the clinics claimed, because they were afraid of the competition. Teeth whiteners used in mall clinics or salons had a higher component of peroxide or other bleaching agents than over-the-counter kits in stores. This increased the risks of tooth sensitivity or permanent damage, and the clinicians were not trained to deal with those dental risks. The clinics, on the other hand, claimed that the whitening gel in their treatments was used for cosmetic purposes, like makeup, and didn’t fall under dental regulations.
Most recently, the American Dental Association petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to classify teeth whiteners so that they can’t be applied outside of a trained dental context. This would effectively shut down all mall clinics and salons. The clinics, meanwhile, are convinced that dentists are fighting them solely to regain lost revenue. This has certainly brought controversy to the idea of affordable teeth whitening. It does mean, though, that business people need to reassess whether saving a few hundred dollars is worth the risk of entrusting their teeth to untrained practitioners. This might be a financial move that could backfire.
