Are number plate flash reflectors legal?
I’m a keen photographer and have just been looking on ebay for a flash deflector for my camera.

It stops speed cameras being able to see your registration number. Are these legal in the UK?
I’m a very law-abiding driver and despite driving for work for many years have never been done for speeding. I’ve always been very careful – am just intrigued by this product!
Unfortunately in this world you can buy many things quite legally but their use may well be illegal. For example a Stanley knife is a perfectly legal piece of kit to buy and to own but if you are caught in possession with this knife in public even if you are a carpet fitter and you forgot to leave it in the van whilst you went to get a pasty for dinner you could easily get done for possession of an offensive weapon. So by the same idea buying and possessing any material that can be applied to a vehicle number plate to restrict its view for any reason is fine BUT if you apply it to a road using vehicle for what would be the prevention of the detection of an offence it would be illegal and you could be reported for the relevant offence. Just having plate dirty enough to prevent easy reading is an offence as are damaged and disfigured plates if that also effects the appearance of the plate.
