What kind of filter should i use for indoor photography while using an External Flash unit?
I just don’t want my pictures to be to over/under exposed
There are quite a few factors missing from this question but I will try to address enough of them to hopefully answer your question.
Usually a photographer will work with a flash unit that has brightness controls on the backside of it. Some are done by a scale of “Dim” to “Bright”, while more expensive ones are controlled by f-stop measurements.
If the photographer is trying to get a certain strength of light (via flash unit) on an object they are shooting, they would either turn up or turn down the brightness of their flash unit.
If the flash is too bright, you can always use different pieces of equipment such as a “softbox” or a shooting umbrella to diffuse the light.
If, for some reason or another, you like the amount of light that the flash is producing but your camera settings won’t allow for you to reduce the exposure enough to present a “properly” exposed image, then you could use an ND (Neutral Density) filter.
Many photographers will use an ND filter so they can shoot with a wider aperture without having to worry about overexposure when shutter speed and/or ISO speed might be an issue. This comes especially handy if you’re working with a bright flash unit that has no (or minimal) brightness controls.
A flash unit with no brightness controls is usually indication of a “cheapy” flash unit. Most cheapy Flash Units aren’t visually compatible with shooting at shutter speeds over 1/160th of a second. This is because the flash unit wasn’t built for high speed shooting like the more expensive flash units designed by professional companies like Nikon, Canon, etc.
Sometimes these cheapy flash units will be so bright that even if you have your ISO speed set to its lowest, and have your shutter speed already set at 1/160th, the image will still be too bright for the aperture that you might want to use. This is when you have to either add diffusion or, if you like hard light, invest in an ND filter.
