External Flash – Canon vs others?

For instance: Canon 430ExII and Sunpak PZ42X TT.

They are pretty much the same in terms of guide number and the Swivel/Bounce Head, so is there any other reasons to make one actually “better” than the other? I am lookign for my first flash, so what should be a better choice?

Any idea is greatly appreciated!

The Sunpak will work, I don’t think that one has the E-TTL slave capability of the 430. Other than that, Sunpak has been making flashes as long as Canon has. It will work in E-TTL mode just fine. Also look at the Metz 48 and 50, the 50 is the newer model. Both of these are completely Canon compatible, more powerful than either of the two you list, and cost much less than the Canon. They do have the E-TTL slave capability. Sigma also makes two (well, 4 now) models that will do everything the Canon flash will do, plus more. The 530 DG ST is the less expensive of the two, without quite as many bells and whistles as the higher end 530 DG Super. They are both E-TTL slaves, and also optical slaves. This means they can be used Off Camera in manual mode, with any camera as a trigger. You don’t need one of the new bodies that has a flash controller built in, or an ST-E2 flash controller, to use them off camera.
