Photography lighting?
I can’t choose between hot light soft boxes, or a strobist beauty dish… Im into shooting glamour and fashion!
That’s more than one choice. Hot lights vs strobes (light source) and beauty dish vs softbox (modifier).
In the hot lights vs strobes, I’d go strobes every time – more powerful, ability to mix flash & ambient & portable for outdoor location work.
As for modifier choice it depends on the look you’re going for. Beauty dishes give a more concentrated, but soft light, with a distinct catch lights in the eyes. Softboxes have more spread (but not like an umbrella, that spills light everywhere). You can control this further with a grid.
I have both softboxes and beauty dishes (plus umbrellas, snoots) as I want to change out the look regularly.
